about

Let me give you some backstory as this tale is super crazy!

I was about 6 or 7 years old. My daycare went on a field trip to this shopping mall in Austin, Texas to record a karaoke CD for our parents to take home. When we got there, the mall had to have been abandoned, as there were only a few shops open for business- this 'karaoke' place being one of them.

This place was really sketchy. It was a small, cramped room with a few 'gold records' on the guys' wall with only a tiny recording booth in the corner. All the kids were sat around the chairs in the room, and me, (perhaps being a Willy Wonka fan) wanted to do the song 'Pure Imagination'. But they didn't have that on the list of songs they could do, so my second choice was, 'Living on a Prayer' by Bon Jovi. I don't remember much from the other kids' sessions other than these two girls were laughing their butts off singing a giggle induced rendition of '1985 ' by Bowling For Soup (probably because it had the word 'ass' in it)

Well it was time for me to record 'Living on a Prayer' and the engineer pulled me aside and told me: 'Now, I'm really proud of this, because I just downloaded this as a ringtone for my Nokia cellphone off of Limewire' (or something to that effect) Not really sure why he was proud to showcase the shadiness of his business but whatever. Time to record!

In front of me was a few receivers, a headphone stand, blue karaoke screen, and a LOT of delay. I had worked with recording before this trip, primarily on those microcassette recordings, and I sang better on note than ANY one of these takes. Believe it or not THIS was the best one! The problem came down to me not being able to hear my own voice as it was being recorded. The only thing I could hear was a backing track of Bon Jovi's vocal, ghostly in the background.

After three takes of that garbage, He and I think myself as well were done, and the final track is here in all of its cheesy, tone-deaf glory!

This is the only surviving track from that Karaoke CD. If I had a copy of the full CD, I would post it here, however, I think my parents just wanted my song copied for personal use. I do recall listening to that '1985' rendition, and hearing those girls crack up whenever they sung 'ass'- wish it still existed, however it is now lost to time.

Happy Birthday! And Enjoy,

Living on a Prayer
